EA Hall Climate Lessons

This project involved two eight grade teacher, Xavier Rubio - science, and Elizabeth Nixon - government.

Roland Saher and Pauline Seales were present on days 2, 4,5

 

Day 1 - Intro by Mr. Rubio included giving students the short survey, and encouraging them to write questions

Day 2 -  Thu Dec 14th, 2017   - Guest teachers Roland Saher and Pauline Seales

               Part One - Student questions reviewed and answered

                   Part two - Student internet activity using Climate.nasa.gov 20 mins          file     CCTeen1_2

                    Includes CO2 levels, Global Temperature, Arctic Ice, Land Ice , Sea Level, Glaciers.

 

Day 3 - Fri Dec 15th -  Mr.Rubio shows several short videos on Climate Solutions and discusses them with the students

Day 4 - Monday Dec 18th - Government class with Ms Nixon 

Students got to think about ideas to deal with climate change in their government classes. They simulated congressional committees to develop and discuss strategies to combat the effects of climate change or to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the first place.

Day 5 - Tuesday Dec 19th - Government class with Ms Nixon

On a second day, they wrote letters to school board members and state politicians calling for the installation of solar panels on the school roof or over the parking lot, the building of infrastructure for bicycles and electric cars, reducing food waste, raising gas prices (with mechanisms to refund low income earners), reducing the number of meat containing meals in the school menu (replaced by non-meat proteins) and subsidizing the price of electric cars. 

They are sending the letters to the local school board and the assembly woman and the senator for their state districts.
