Climate Change at Shoreline Middle School

This was taught to approx. 130 8th graders at Shoreline Middle school in Live Oak in Oct 2017

A,Preparation

2. Oct 17th 12:45 Pauline and Susan get together - survey results, lesson details

Note the students have plant growing projects and spend 5+ mins checking and watering their plants each day

Day 1   Mon Oct 23

1. Short ppt - review of survey ,slides of recent weather and questions about travel to school  10 mins

2.Introduction to Climate Change  is a student internet search using Climate.nasa.gov  20 mins

Includes video link, CO2 levels, Global Temperature, Arctic Ice, Land Ice , Sea Level, Glaciers.

3. Scenarios - stories if young people affected by the recent fires and hurricanes  about 10 mins

Day 2   Tue Oct 24

1. Review of HW  Q 11-23 of Intro      5 mins

2. What’s warming the world?   - 2 mins

3. Short ppt - review      file name  Sln_8GPart 2  -  about 10 mins  18 slides 

4. Solar Activity - very quick intro - pre-play questions only - no videos

5. Hands on  Activity

Step 1 - Students discover how to light a small bulb with a battery

Step 2 - return bulb, use small motor with propeller 

Step 3 - power motor with solar cell instead of battery

 

Day 3    Wed Oct 25   (weds - short classes)  

1. Solar Activity cont. - videos  -  Short Intro to Solar cells - short videos & review

            “what did you learn?”  paragraph

 

Day 4   Thu Oct 26  

1. Paper “How hopeful do you feel..?”  write a paragraph first

            Then read handout with recent climate related news good/bad info -  discuss with peers

            answer 3 questions                               file name  Is there Hope       - about 20 mins
